Riviera Maya Sargassum and Best-Month Calendar

See all 12 months at a glance: typical sargassum level, Atlantic hurricane-season overlay, whether to lean on beaches or cenotes, and a rough read on crowds and prices. Choose what matters most (clear beach water, lower cost, fewer people, whale sharks) and the tool ranks the best months. Everything shown is a typical, historical pattern from public reporting, not a forecast, and sargassum varies sharply by year. What matters most? (pick one or more)

Levels are typical patterns, not forecasts. Hurricane overlay is basin-wide Atlantic climatology from NOAA, not a Quintana Roo landfall probability. Crowd and price columns are rough editorial scores from travel-media consensus (peak: late December to April; cheaper: roughly May to November).

How to read the calendar, and what it does not cover

Each month card shows a typical sargassum level (low, moderate or high), the hurricane-season overlay, a short beach-versus-cenote tip, and rough crowd and price scores. The picker adds up a score for each month from the priorities you tick and lists the top three. It is a transparent rule of thumb: for clear beach water it rewards low sargassum and low hurricane exposure; for price and crowds it favors May through November; for whale sharks it favors the months operators commonly cite.

Where the pattern comes from

Public reporting and officials describe a season from about April to October, with the heaviest arrivals typically June to August and a decline into November and December. Research on the Mexican Caribbean also shows large swings between years and between beaches, with the Puerto Morelos to Tulum stretch among the most variable. 2026 has been described in the press as a record year, which is exactly why a typical month can still surprise you. Beaches facing the open sea take more; sheltered or island-west beaches can stay clearer on the same day.

Hurricane season, honestly

NOAA's National Hurricane Center defines the Atlantic season as June 1 to November 30, with the peak around September 10 and most activity between mid-August and mid-October. That is about the whole basin; a given week on the Riviera Maya is usually uneventful, but September and October carry more risk. Buy flexible bookings and travel insurance if you go then, and understand any hurricane clause before you pay.

Not covered

We do not forecast sargassum, rain, water temperature or visibility, and we cannot see conditions at an individual beach. The whale-shark window is based on operator and press reports; confirm exact dates with a licensed operator. Scores for crowds and prices are general and will spike around Christmas, New Year, Easter week and local holidays. If your dates are fixed, build a plan B around cenotes, pools and ruins, and check the live monitors above.

Frequently asked questions

When is sargassum worst in the Riviera Maya?

Public reporting and officials generally describe a season from about April to October, with the heaviest arrivals typically in June, July and August, easing in the fall and lowest around December to February. It varies a lot from year to year; 2026 has been reported as a record year. Treat the calendar as a typical pattern, not a forecast, and check a live monitor within a few days of your beach day.

Is there daily sargassum data on this page?

No. We do not publish or fabricate daily numbers. The page links to live monitors: the citizen-science Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) bulletins and the UNAM LANOT satellite page. Beach conditions change by the day and by the beach, so look at the current maps before you go.

Do cenotes get sargassum?

No. Cenotes are freshwater, inland sinkholes, so sargassum on the coast does not affect them. That makes cenotes, pools, and ruins a sensible plan B on heavy-seaweed days. Heavy rain can still affect road access and visibility, so confirm with the operator in the rainy months.

When is hurricane season and is it dangerous to travel then?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the peak around September 10 and most activity from mid-August to mid-October, according to NOAA's National Hurricane Center. Most trips in those months go ahead without a direct hit, but you should buy flexible bookings and insurance, and watch nhc.noaa.gov in the week before you fly.

When can you swim with whale sharks near Cancun?

Operators and travel media commonly cite roughly mid-May or June through September, with July and August busiest, out of Isla Mujeres, Cancun and Holbox. We could not confirm the exact permit dates on an official CONANP page, so confirm the season with your operator.
